Your bicycle isn’t some random collection of metal bits. It’s not a toy and it’s not a Walmart Special. Your bicycle is incredible – it’s your partner-in-crime, your personal jet-pack, an important part of you and your life. Let’s celebrate with a handcrafted headbadge.

What’s a headbadge? It’s like a hood ornament for your bike!

“When contemplating Christmas gifts for my girlfriend, it took me about three seconds to settle on a custom headbadge for her bike. I will never forget the look on her face when she opened the box and saw the raven smiling up at her. She was speechless for literally ten minutes and stares dreamily at it on her bike every time we pass it on the way out the door.” – Rachel Wiederhoeft

headbadge, head badge

A headbadge (also known as a head tube badge) is a metal ornament that adheres to the head tube of your bicycle (or, sometimes, the top tube). Traditionally, bike makers would use elaborate, enameled headbadges to demonstrate the beauty and skill of their handicraft. Today, you’re lucky if you get a sticker. But a bicycle’s beauty and importance should still be recognized! So, rather than relegate headbadges to a thing of the past, I’m resurrecting the practice.

We’ll work together to design an image that represents you and your bike. Then, I’ll use my trusty jeweler’s saw to cut it out of your choice of metal. I’ll file smooth all the edges, add some texture, and form it to fit your bike.

All it takes is a simple silhouette-style image.

  • Basic Pricing: Copper and Brass: $85 • Sterling Silver: $100
  • Complexity Fee: Designs which incorporate more than six cuts into the interior of the metal will increase the base price by $10-30, depending on the individual details (see Headbadge Design 101 for more information about complex designs)
  • Turn-around time is approximately 3-7 days, once a design has been finalized.

“It was such a pleasure dealing with a professional person who is able to communicate via email as well as you.” – Justin Hughes

How do you attach your headbadge to your bike frame? For a strong, permanent hold, I recommend a 2-part epoxy. Apply epoxy to the headbadge and stick it to your bike frame. Then clean off any spillage, and hold the headbadge in place with masking tape or painter’s tape until the epoxy sets. Another option is to use an industrial-strength double-stick tape. Both products are available in the glue section of your local hardware store. (If your frame is already tapped for screws, we can also incorporate screw mounts into the design, so you can attach your headbadge with hardware instead of an epoxy.)
